Solar 101 · Power Production

Power is a moment.
Energy adds up.

Learn what the numbers on a solar proposal mean—and what can change them.

kW: system power

Kilowatts describe a power rating. A 10 kW DC array is rated under test conditions; it will not produce 10 kW continuously.

kWh: energy produced

Kilowatt-hours measure energy over time. An average output of 5 kW sustained for 4 hours produces 20 kWh.

Generation is not export

Some solar energy is used directly by your property. Only the surplus sent through the meter becomes an export.

Why output changes.

The property

Roof direction, tilt, obstructions and shade influence the sunlight reaching the modules. Ground mounts offer different layout choices when land and approvals permit.

The season & equipment

Daylight, clouds, temperature and snow affect generation. Equipment conversion, wiring and other system losses also belong in an annual production estimate.
Compare annual production with annual consumption, and review the assumptions behind the estimate. A battery shifts when available energy is used; it does not create additional solar generation.
